What you do:
Reporting to the Vice President, Head of U.S. Government and External Affairs (GEA), the Government Relations Director will function as an integral part of the Allianz Life (AZL) Legal organization. Primary functional accountability is to serve as the lead for AZL US Government Relations (GR) initiatives and programs, working with key senior / executive-level stakeholders and leaders in support of our company's regulatory and legislative policy initiatives.
Requiring a high degree of self-motivation, this Director role will work independently with limited daily direction from manager to proactively identify and assess emerging legal / regulatory / policy issues, clearly articulate potential impacts to the organization, and develop and implement proposed strategy to address those issues; providing clear guidance to business partners, directly tying insights and recommendations to our business and the strategic direction of the company. The role will develop, own, and advance opportunities to influence government and regulatory policy in alignment with industry interests and strategy with sound and trusted advice, pairing vision with the ability to execute on proposals and decisions.
The role will organize and lead cross-functional meetings involving GR initiatives, bringing together the necessary internal and external stakeholders to shape public policy and advance AZL and industry priorities. Consistently, effectively and persuasively communicate, orally and in writing, with internal and external stakeholders, including AZL leadership, trade association leadership and staff, policymakers, and regulators. Ensure communications accurately, and with the appropriate level of detail, portray AZL’s position on issues in a manner tailored appropriately to each audience.
Acting as a key deputy to the US Head of GEA, manage, monitor and regularly report to AZL’s Chief Legal Officer and Deputy General Counsel on AZL GR budget items (including trade association dues/assessments/forecasting/etc.) to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance.
Key job responsibilities:
- Remain at the forefront of emerging legislative, regulatory and industry trends. Analyze and evaluate proposed state and federal legislation / regulation impacting AZL (and its subsidiaries), partnering with key internal subject matter experts and stakeholders to identify potential impact to AZL and develop AZL's position and response strategy on such proposals
- Actively engage in broad range of trade association calls and working groups, accurately and effectively representing AZL and advocating for the organization’s position and interests. Successfully influence regulatory and legislative changes in alignment with AZL interests and priorities
- Build broad based, productive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders based, in part, on strong in-depth knowledge of the life insurance, annuity and securities industry and related issues, as well as strong knowledge of AZL’s business and products. Leverage that knowledge and those relationships to advance the company’s interests and objectives
- Translate industry, regulatory and governmental relationships and working knowledge of substantive issues to actionable insights and recommendations for internal stakeholders, including executive and senior leadership, ensuring awareness of key developments, proposed strategic responses, and opportunities for engagement and influence
- Develop, drive and deliver on AZL GR initiatives, in alignment with AZL’s key strategic initiatives, including targeted outreach efforts, grassroot campaigns, effectively prioritizing and advocating for those with greatest business impact. Proactively and consistently report to AZL leadership, including AZL’s Chief Legal Officer and Head of GEA on progress and outcomes of these initiatives. Accountable for AZL GR administrative functions including budget planning and reporting

What you bring:
- 6+ years’ experience required
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Economics or related field or equivalent experience required
- Demonstrated capability organizing and leading cross-functional initiatives and forums specific to GR topics and business impact, effectively building and leveraging strong relationships to advance progress.
- Understanding of the Financial Services industry, and the impacts of regulatory / public policy considerations on life and annuity products and companies, and the means to influence regulators and policy makers in the life and annuity industry
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes holders of H-1B, H4, L-1, L-2, TN, OPT, CPT, and other nonimmigrant visas
