The Role

  • The Tool and Die Coordinator is responsible for day-to-day coordination of tool and die activities in a high-volume automotive sheet metal stamping environment. This role ensures dies, tooling, and related resources are available, safe, and capable to support the production schedule. The Coordinator serves as the primary interface between Die Room, Press Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and outside vendors to minimize downtime, improve die performance, and support launch and tryout events.

What You’ll Do

  • Coordinate daily die room priorities based on production schedule, press downtime, and quality concerns.
  • Plan, sequence, and track die repair, PMs, engineering changes, and tryout work to meet program and production timing.
  • Maintain and communicate die status (in press, in repair, in storage, at vendor, in transit) to production, maintenance, and leadership.
  • Support press set-ups and die change activities, ensuring required dies, tooling, and components are available and verified.
  • Coordinate weekend and off-shift work (e.g., repair, tryout, PM, launch activities) including work lists, coverage, and handoff to oncoming shifts.
  • Partner with Engineering, Quality, and Production to address repeat die issues, dimensional concerns, and scrap/downtime drivers; help prioritize corrective actions.
  • Ensure adherence to WSS PS12 Die Handling and all applicable GM safety standards for die storage, handling, rigging, and press operations.
  • Help maintain accurate die storage maps, identification, and labeling; support improvements to die flow and storage layout.
  • Work with Materials, Purchasing, and vendors to coordinate off-site tooling work, including shipping, receipts, and timing follow-up.
  • Use available systems (e.g., local trackers, spreadsheets, shop logs, and GM systems) to track work orders, downtime, and die performance metrics.
  • Support launch and tryout events (T-events, blitz runs, recipe development) through die readiness, schedule coordination, and on-floor presence as needed.
  • Participate in GMS / continuous improvement activities focused on safety, quality, throughput, and cost.
  • Provide clear communication and shift handoff regarding die status, open issues, and next-step actions.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 3+ years experience in an automotive stamping, tool & die, or heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of stamping dies, die repair, PM practices, and die tryout.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, manage multiple concurrent activities, and meet aggressive timing requirements.
  • Proven track record of safe work practices in a heavy industrial environment (overhead cranes, rigging, presses, weld, machining, etc.).
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal) with hourly, salary, leadership, and external partners.
  • Journeyperson-level experience in Tool & Die, Die Maker, or closely related skilled trade; or equivalent combination of education and relevant stamping/tooling experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in an automotive stamping, tool & die, or heavy manufacturing environment.

This includes direct company sponsorship, entry of GM as the immigration employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization requiring a written submission or other immigration support from the company (e.g., H1-B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, etc).
