Opening statement: Experienced reporter needed to anchor Breaking & Trending News in the fourth-largest metro area in the U.S.

Job description: The Dallas Morning News is looking for an experienced reporter who can anchor the Breaking & Trending team in the nation’s fourth-largest metro area. This team is at the center of The Dallas Morning News and leads the way on most major stories that drive conversation in D-FW and sometimes nationally. The senior reporter will be the quarterback for this team on major breaking and trending stories, leading the way on smart, relevant follows and writing well-crafted enterprise and accountability stories that put events into perspective and show the impact they have had on our city. They will work closely with editors and other reporters to position the entire team for success.

What will you do?

  • Anchor coverage of major breaking and trending news in our community

  • Deliver high-impact journalism that’s derived from coverage that originates on our Breaking & Trending team

  • Work with editors to help shape strategy and coverage plans for major events

  • Serve as a mentor to the Breaking & Trending team

  • Respond with flexibility to major news stories

  • Serve as the primary rewrite reporter on major stories and major event coverage, assimilating feeds and doing your own reporting to create well-crafted narratives for digital and print audiences, often on a tight deadline

  • Work with editors and other reporters to identify and execute next- and subsequent-day follow-ups to major news

  • Respond with flexibility to major events

  • Write about difficult topics that require thorough, careful reporting and deft writing

  • Create and maintain data, coverage guides and source lists that will help the Breaking & Trending team cover homicides, major protests and other high-profile news

  • Develop and maintain a network of sources that help us lead the conversation in D-FW

What will it take to be successful?

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or a related field
  • At least five years of experience in journalism or a related field, and a demonstrated aptitude for covering breaking news and writing insightful stories from original reporting feeds.
  • Deep knowledge of North Texas is preferred
  • Strong writing skills
  • The ability to juggle multiple stories in a high-intensity environment
  • Creativity and curiosity in developing insightful follow-up content
  • Impeccable news judgment
  • A knowledge of what stories will resonate readers
  • The ability to assess and connect with readers’ interests during major news events
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with audience analytics
  • Ability to make smart decisions, work effectively under pressure, communicate clearly and adapt quickly in a dynamic, high-pressure environment
