WTAE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh and a Hearst Television station, is seeking a highly technical, automation-driven Newscast Automation Operator/Director to execute complex live productions in a next-generation control room environment.
This position is built for a person who understands that modern newscasts are driven by integrated systems, MOS workflows, and precision automation. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise, thrives in high-performance automated environments, and takes ownership of delivering flawless, live broadcasts.

Position Overview
The Newscast Automation Operator/Director is responsible for the technical orchestration of automated live news productions using advanced production control systems. This includes programming, executing, monitoring, and troubleshooting fully automated rundowns in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
This role requires a systems thinker who understands the integration between newsroom computer systems and automation engines, including routing, graphics, servers, and audio.
Key Responsibilities
Automated Production Execution
- Deliver live newscasts using advanced news automation control systems. Experience with Ross OverDrive, Grass Valley Ignite, or comparable platforms is beneficial)
- Build, code, and execute automation rundowns through MOS-integrated newsroom systems (ENPS or equivalent)
- Lead and punch shows while executing automation and manual intervention when required
- Maintain precision timing and clean technical execution across all production layers
- Act as a leader in the studio when assigned to the Floor Director position.
Systems Integration & Technical Oversight
- Monitor and manage integration between:
- Production switchers
- Video servers and playback systems
- Graphics engines
- Audio consoles
- Routing systems
- Studio robotics
- Identify, diagnose, and resolve automation conflicts and system faults in real time
- Provide technical leadership during breaking news and high-pressure live environments
- Collaborate with Engineering and IT teams to optimize workflows and implement system improvements
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years operating highly automated or conventional live newscasts in a professional broadcast environment
- Advanced hands-on experience with production automation systems and MOS-driven workflows
- Strong understanding of newsroom systems (ENPS or similar) and rundown-based production
- Proficiency with:
- Production switchers
- Video servers
- Integrated audio systems
- Router control systems
- Studio robotics and automation interfaces
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues under live conditions
- Strong communication skills with the ability to lead news productions in high-pressure environments
- Related military broadcast or automation experience will be considered
Work Environment & Expectations
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather
- Expected to report to work regardless of weather conditions
- In-person attendance required
