Country Claims Manager, Italy
Location: Milan, Italy
Munich Re Specialty was formed in 2023 as a stand-alone division, bringing together the wider Munich Re Group's primary specialty business units. With strong foundations in the UK and the US, MRS-GM is expanding its footprint across key European markets.
As part of this growth, we are seeking a Country Claims Manager, Italy to establish and lead our Claims capability in the Italian market.
This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in building a best-in-class Claims function supporting the growth of our Specialty business across Property, Construction & Engineering, and future lines of business. Working closely with the Country MD, Underwriting leadership and international stakeholders, you will drive claims excellence, contribute to business strategy, and help shape our long-term success in Italy.
This role will suit a commercially minded and technically strong claims leader who enjoys working in an entrepreneurial environment, building capabilities, influencing strategy, and delivering outstanding outcomes for clients, brokers, partners, and insureds.
Responsibilities
Claims Leadership & Technical Excellence
- Manage and oversee a portfolio of claims across Property, Construction & Engineering and other specialty lines as the portfolio evolves.
- Provide technical expertise across coverage analysis, liability assessment, policy interpretation, reserving, quantum evaluation, and recovery opportunities.
- Lead major loss, catastrophe, and complex claims strategies, negotiations, and resolutions.
- Appoint and manage external experts including loss adjusters, engineers, forensic accountants, surveyors, and legal counsel.
- Ensure claims are handled proactively, fairly, efficiently, and in line with regulatory requirements and best practice.
- Oversee delegated claims arrangements, including MGA and TPA relationships.
Business Partnership & Market Engagement
- Act as a strategic partner to the Country MD, Underwriting, Distribution, Finance, and other key stakeholders.
- Provide claims insights to support underwriting strategy, portfolio management, risk selection, and policy wording enhancements.
- Contribute to the development and execution of the Italian business plan.
- Build strong relationships with brokers, clients, partners, risk managers, and market stakeholders.
- Represent Munich Re Specialty externally in the Italian market and internally across the wider organization.
Claims Capability & Operational Development
- Support the design and implementation of claims processes, systems, controls, and tools as the business continues to grow.
- Develop scalable and resilient claims capabilities across multiple lines of business.
- Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support the ongoing development of claims governance and reporting frameworks.
Governance, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure claims operations comply with all relevant Italian and European regulatory requirements.
- Maintain robust claims governance, quality assurance, delegated authority controls, and file management standards.
- Participate in audits, regulatory reviews, and internal control activities.
- Identify operational, conduct, and systemic risks and support remediation efforts.
- Act as an escalation point for complex and sensitive claims matters.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide leadership, coaching, and technical guidance to claims professionals.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Support recruitment, succession planning, and capability development within the Italian Claims team.
- Champion technical excellence and professional development.
Knowledge and Skills
- 12+ years' experience in commercial insurance claims and/or relevant legal practice.
- Proven leadership experience within Claims management.
- Significant experience handling Property and Construction & Engineering claims.
- Strong expertise in complex, high-value, and cross-border claims.
- Strong understanding of Italian insurance regulation and claims practices.
- Experience managing delegated claims authority frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with brokers, clients, reinsurers, legal advisers, regulators, and other stakeholders.
- Commercial mindset with a strong understanding of underwriting and portfolio management dynamics.
- Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
- Fluent Italian and English.
- Additional European language skills would be advantageous.
