Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
Owns the end‑to‑end software homologation lifecycle for features with significant regulatory impact, ensuring Rivian’s software and calibrations remain compliant from initial certification through post‑launch updates across global markets. This role maps regulations and standards to Rivian software architectures, drives requirement and test coverage, and leads risk assessments and mitigation plans for software‑driven regulatory functions.
Responsibilities
- Own and maintain the end‑to‑end view of homologation requirements with large software dependencies, mapping regulations and standards to Rivian systems, features, and architectures for all markets Rivian operates in.
- Track software‑dependent functions and feature requirements through maturity gates, ensuring that implementation, validation, and documentation are complete and approved ahead of formal certification and type approval testing.
- Define and drive the software homologation roadmap across vehicle programs, including feature readiness, regulatory gaps, risk assessments, and mitigation plans.
- Partner with Homologation, Cybersecurity, and Software teams to interpret and implement UN ECE R155/R156 controls, documentation, and objective evidence needed for authorities and technical services (e.g., CSMS/SUMS documentation sets, assessments, and audits).
- Plan, execute, and oversee regression testing using HIL and SIL environments post‑certification to ensure that software updates and calibrations continue to satisfy regulatory and homologation requirements.
- Plan and conduct vehicle‑level tests (on track, lab, and public road where applicable) and analyze results to confirm Rivian products meet global regulatory requirements and internal performance targets.
- Audit, maintain, and continuously improve test strategies and coverage for software‑relevant regulatory requirements, including post‑certification audits to identify gaps, process breakdowns, and opportunities for improvement.
- Manage documentation of test assets, software and calibration build levels, and maintain clear traceability of hardware and software changes over time to ensure ongoing compliance with regulations and certifications.
- Lead cross‑functional reviews of software change requests (e.g., OTA, feature rollouts, field fixes) to assess homologation impact and define required test and documentation updates.
- Monitor the status of global regulations as they are updated, with a focus on US and EU markets, and research new market entry testing requirements, including vehicle requirements, test equipment, facilities, and procedures.
- Work with Vehicle Engineering, Vehicle Integration, hardware, and software teams to ensure correlation of HIL/SIL and vehicle‑level test results to real‑world expected behavior while achieving regulatory and functional objectives.
- Develop and own best practices, templates, and processes (e.g., requirement mappings, test specs, evidence packages, dashboards) that enable efficient reuse and scaling of software homologation solutions across new programs and variants.
- Serve as the subject‑matter expert and escalation point for software‑related homologation questions, guiding technical and program decisions to balance compliance, feature ambition, and time‑to‑market.
Qualifications
- 10+ years’ experience in automotive industry with a software or calibration background.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Industrial, or Computer Engineering, or related Engineering field.
- Demonstrated reliability and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Deep curiosity to understand the product and how the regulations may be applied.
- Experience with formal requirement management tools.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships across the Rivian organization as well as with external suppliers and vendors.
