Job Description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

Rivian’s Autonomy organization is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, ML Applications to join the Data & Cloud team. You will design and deliver large-scale applications and data pipelines using modern cloud services and open-source frameworks. You will own significant parts of systems that support ML/DL model training, infrastructure, and data annotation tools, partnering closely with architects, ML engineers, and data engineers. You will help the Autonomy organization move faster by building reliable, observable software on top of petabyte-scale sensor datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Own backend and RESTful API design and implementation (Go/Python), including performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Build and evolve full-stack web applications (TypeScript, React) used by internal ML and annotation teams.
  • Manage data persistence using NoSQL databases like MongoDB. Understand tradeoffs for consistency, scale, and cost.
  • Partner with architects, ML engineers, and data engineers on requirements, architecture and design.
  • Deploy services and pipelines using CI/CD pipelines, Git, Kubernetes, and AWS technologies.
  • Optimize cloud infrastructure for cost, performance and reliability.
  • Uphold quality through testing, code review, and operational practices.
  • Mentor peers and junior engineers on engineering standards and best practices.

Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field and at least 3 years of relevant experience; or at least 6 years of industry experience without a degree.
  • Strong experience in a backend language like Python, Golang or Java
  • Demonstrated experience of full stack application development.
  • Relevant experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and web frameworks (React preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with databases such as MongoDB and Postgres; NoSQL at scale is a plus.
  • Track record of owning features or services end-to-end and working independently with minimal day-to-day direction.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and structured problem-solving across technical and product stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with end-to-end ML workflows and the production lifecycle of ML data (ingestion, labeling, training, evaluation).
  • Experience with AWS, MLOps, and data/ML pipelines in cloud environments.
